A massive new Wawa superstore is poised to open on the border of Berlin Township and Voorhees Township after years of debate over its potential traffic impact.
It’s not entirely a done deal. Berlin Township Planning Board approved the store at an August 18 meeting, but Voorhees Township approval is still needed to move forward.
The 5,915 square foot Wawa will sit on Route 73 near the Cooper Road intersection. It will include a gas station, a 55-space parking lot with spaces for oversized vehicles, and will be open 24 hours a day.
Additionally, the project brings infrastructure improvements: extended left-turn lane on Cooper Road to ease congestion, extensive landscaping, and upgraded stormwater infrastructure.
The Fight That Held it Up
The path here was not an easy one. Voorhees Planning Board initially denied the application in December of 2025, citing concerns over potential traffic impact. This prompted a lawsuit by Developer Niki-J&J Voorhees Cooper Partners LLC, according to NJ.com.
The court-approved settlement requires the application to go back before the Voorhees Planning Board.
Until then, the project remains in limbo.
If approved, it will join three other Wawas opening across the state in Upper Pittsgrove, Tinton Falls, and Barnegat.
One thing is for certain. New Jersey can never have too many Wawas.
