A tragic accident occurred early Monday morning on the NJ Transit River Line in Mansfield Township, New Jersey, resulting in one death and six injuries. The incident took place around 6 a.m. near U.S. Route 130 when a fallen tree obstructed the tracks and was struck by the light rail train. Reports indicate the train operator became trapped following the collision, prompting a swift response from emergency teams.
At the time of the crash, 45 passengers were on board. Helicopter footage revealed a large portion of the tree lodged under the front of the train, suggesting the force of the impact was substantial. Crews on the scene worked to assess injuries and manage the rescue operation.
Due to the severity of the situation, NJ Transit suspended River Line service in both directions while officials conducted investigations. Additionally, a section of Route 130 southbound was closed to facilitate emergency operations and ensure public safety.
This incident follows other serious rail accidents in New Jersey. In August 2024, a fatal accident involving a River Line train in Palmyra claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy at a grade crossing. While no passengers were injured in that event, it highlighted ongoing safety concerns for both pedestrians and rail operators
