Don’t Miss the Geminid Meteor Shower This Weekend

Staff

Get ready to bundle up and head outside because one of the year’s most spectacular meteor showers peaks this weekend. The Geminid meteor shower, known for its bold, colorful streaks across the night sky, will hit its prime on the night of Friday, Dec. 13, into Saturday, Dec. 14.

The Geminids could light up the sky with up to 120 meteors per hour, making it one of the most active meteor showers of the year according to NASA. Unlike most showers, which come from comets, the Geminids originate from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This origin gives the event a unique twist, as the meteors consist of different material than those from comets. The Geminids stand out for their vivid colors—meteors may appear in shades of green, purple, and amber, creating a dazzling display against the dark sky.

Unfortunately, the full moon will rise just as the meteors reach their peak, competing for your attention. However, experts say the brighter, more striking meteors will still shine through despite the moon’s interference.

For the best viewing experience, head to a location away from city lights. The shower will remain visible throughout the night, but the prime time to see the most meteors runs from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., when the sky stays darkest. If possible, find a spot far from artificial light where you can witness meteors streaking across the entire sky—not just from the radiant point in the constellation Gemini.

Whether you’re an experienced skywatcher or a first-time observer, the Geminid meteor shower offers an unforgettable experience. Bundle up, head outdoors, and make sure your eyes are adjusted to the dark—you won’t want to miss this celestial show.
