A fire rips through Millbrook Village Apartments in Edison, NJ early Sunday, displacing more than 70 residents and severely damaging a 36-unit building on Vista Drive. The blaze erupted at 4:30 a.m. near Woodbridge Avenue, authorities said. Flames consumed half the complex, leaving little to salvage, according to Mayor Sam Joshi.

Eight units burned completely, while another eight sustained heavy damage. The fire started on the ground floor and spread rapidly to the second level, the deputy fire chief said. Three residents were injured: two suffered smoke inhalation, and one had minor injuries. No fatalities occurred, and firefighters evacuated all residents.

Crews from Edison, Colonia, South Plainfield, New Market, Sayreville, and New Brunswick battled the three-alarm fire as thick smoke filled the air. Officials said the cause remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious.

The Red Cross and the Office of Emergency Management are assisting displaced residents with financial aid and other immediate needs. Joshi said the apartment’s landlord has vacant units available for those who lost their homes. City officials are working with management to speed up rebuilding efforts. Residents with identification can retrieve belongings from less affected units, but water, electricity, and gas remain off at the complex.
