A 28-year-old man was hospitalized Tuesday after being struck by lightning on the 15th hole at Ballyowen Golf Course in Sussex County, officials said.

The strike happened just before 2 p.m. as storms moved in over Hardyston. Witness Brian Delia, who was golfing nearby, said he saw lightning for about 30 minutes before the man was hit about 300 yards ahead, according to Eyewitness News.

Delia said no warning was given before the storm turned dangerous. He says sirens and horns did not start going off until they had already evacuated to the clubhouse and the police had already arrived.

Delia caught video of the darkening sky moments before the strike and described the victim’s father as distraught as his son was airlifted to a hospital. The man’s condition was not released.

Crystal Springs Resort confirmed the incident, saying the course was operating normally before the fast-moving storm and that staff did sound horns to clear players.

“Our primary concern right now is the well-being of the guest and his family,” spokesperson Michelle Abate said.
