Hoboken experienced a water main break early Tuesday morning that flooded several streets and disrupted transit and water services in the city. Residents were urged to avoid the affected area.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. at the intersection of Fifth and Clinton Streets, resulting in significant flooding near the Church Towers complex. Veolia Water reported that the break involved a 12-inch main, which affected water pressure across parts of the city. Crews were working alongside the Hoboken Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to contain and repair the damage.
#Hoboken: Crews have isolated the 12” main at 5th & Clinton and pressure will be stabilizing systemwide.
Repairs will require a service interruption impacting Church Towers. We will continue to provide updates on the status of the repair.@CityofHoboken @HobokenOEM pic.twitter.com/CrpQTJvNHi
Clinton Street was closed between Fourth and Sixth Streets, with water seen flowing across several blocks by 7:30 a.m. NJ Transit diverted buses to alternate routes, affecting the 126 line to New York. Buses were rerouted via Willow Avenue, Fourth Street, Observer Highway, Washington Street, and Newark Street.
In a statement, Veolia confirmed that crews had isolated the break, which was expected to stabilize pressure across the water system. Repairs, however, would result in a temporary service interruption for some customers, including those in the Church Towers area. Updates on the situation were being provided via Hoboken’s social media platforms and Nixle alerts.
Officials have not yet specified when full service will be restored.
