Honda has issued a recall affecting approximately 1.7 million vehicles due to a defect in the steering gearbox. This issue impacts various Honda and Acura models manufactured from 2022 to 2025. The announcement was made on Wednesday. It highlights potential issues that may cause abnormal steering noise, increased steering effort, or a “sticky” steering feel, raising concerns for drivers’ safety.

The recall includes popular models such as the 2022-2025 Honda Civic Sedan, the 2023-2025 Honda CR-V, the 2023-2025 Acura Integra, and the 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S. Therefore, this recall particularly affects many drivers in New Jersey, where Honda ranks as one of the most popular car brands. The Honda Civic and CR-V consistently rank among the most owned vehicles in the state.

Throughout November, Honda plans to notify affected owners via mail. The company encourages these owners to take their vehicles to authorized Honda or Acura dealers. Technicians at these dealerships will redistribute or add grease and replace the gear spring with an improved component—all at no charge to the customer. This proactive approach aims to minimize safety risks associated with steering difficulties.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigating the steering issue in March 2023. This was after receiving 61 customer complaints about steering problems in the U.S. market between September 2018 and March 2023. While reports show no fatalities or injuries linked to this defect, NHTSA noted that 11 drivers lost control of their vehicles due to increased steering effort, resulting in incidents where their vehicles left the roadway.

Honda urges all owners of affected models to take this issue seriously and seek repairs promptly. Ensuring the safety of drivers and passengers remains a top priority for Honda. New Jersey residents should remain vigilant and monitor their mail for notifications regarding this significant recall.
