A stretch of I-80 in Wharton, shut down since March 19 due to a sinkhole, will remain closed longer than initially expected. Officials had aimed to reopen two westbound lanes this week, but that plan has been delayed.
The state Department of Transportation now anticipates a full reopening of both directions by May. The setback comes after a “significant void” was discovered beneath the left lane of I-80 west, officials announced on Friday. Meanwhile, the eastbound lanes may take at least six weeks to be ready for traffic. The closure followed the formation of three sinkholes along the highway, causing disruptions for commuters and local businesses alike. With I-80 out of service, more travelers have turned to NJ Transit, while nearby small businesses have reported a decline in customers. For now, detours remain in effect.
Westbound I-80 Detour (Exit 34B):
- Drivers should take Exit 34B to Route 15 North (Jefferson/Sparta). Stay in the left lane on Route 15 North. At Pondview Drive, use the left two lanes to make a U-turn onto Route 15 South. Take the ramp back to I-80 West.
Eastbound I-80 Detour (Exit 34):
- Drivers must take Exit 34 onto Route 15 (Wharton/Dover/Sparta). At the end of the ramp, keep right and follow signs for Route 15 North (Jefferson/Sparta). Stay right to merge onto Route 15 North. Follow signs for Pondview Drive and U-turn lanes. Use the left two lanes at Pondview Drive to make a U-turn onto Route 15 South. Stay left and take the exit for I-80 East.
Alternate Routes:
To bypass the affected area, motorists are advised to use Exit 28 and follow either Route 10 East or Route 46 East.
Route 10 Eastbound:
- Take Exit 28 from I-80 East to Route 46 East. Follow Route 46 East and merge onto Route 10 East. Take the ramp to I-287 North, then follow signs back to I-80 East.
Route 46 Eastbound:
- Take Exit 28 to Route 46 East and continue for several miles. Use the left two lanes to turn left at the traffic signal, staying on Route 46 East. Turn left onto Route 15 North in Dover to reconnect with I-80. Alternatively, continue 12 miles on Route 46 East and merge onto I-80 East.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternate routes while repairs continue.
