Inspira Health opened its expanded maternity unit at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill on Monday. It’s the first piece of a full $257 million campus overhaul.

The new maternity wing has doubled in size—expanding from 18,000 square feet to roughly 36,000 square feet, and staffed beds jumped from 20 to 38, according to a press release from Inspira

The space was built around a simple idea: get mothers through labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum care without feeling like they’re being shuffled from room to room. The improved maternity care unit works to do just that.

“Opening this expanded maternity unit is an important step forward for families across South Jersey and for the future of Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill,” said Lydia Stockman, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at Inspira. “More families are choosing Inspira to welcome their babies, and this investment gives our teams the space, capacity and flexibility to meet that demand while continuing to provide high-quality care close to home.”

Christi Dooley, AVP of Maternal Child Health, said the new unit was built to match the level of care patients already expect from Inspira. “Families can expect a clear, supportive experience from arrival through delivery and postpartum care, with spaces designed to support privacy, communication and the many needs of parents and newborns,” Dooley said.

The First Piece of a Larger Puzzle

The maternity unit is just the first part of a much bigger project.

Since construction began, Inspira has expanded the scope of its plans to fully build out a new five-story, 150,000-square-foot tower rather than leave space in reserve. That tower will add a 32-bed surgical unit, additional intensive care capacity, and specialized neuro ICU resources tied to Inspira’s neuroscience partnership with Cooper University Health Care.

Once finished, the full project is expected to add 86 beds, bringing the hospital’s licensed bed count to 296, along with a 24-bed observation unit intended to ease emergency department boarding. The new tower is expected to begin seeing patients in early 2027, followed by renovations to existing hospital space for clinical, dining, and pharmacy services.

Inspira operates four hospitals, two cancer centers, and eight multi-specialty health centers throughout South Jersey, with roughly 1,450 physicians and advanced practice providers and about 8,000 employees across the system.
