New York City’s LaGuardia Airport, once considered one of the worst in the U.S., has been named the best airport in the country by Forbes Travel Guide in its first Verified Air Travel Awards. The accolade reflects extensive upgrades completed during a $8 billion redevelopment, transforming the airport from a dated facility into a modernized hub for travel.
Forbes Travel Guide, in its effort to “celebrate the best airline and airport experiences,” evaluated 22 categories, enlisting 5,000 travel and hospitality experts for feedback. Among factors in the airport’s success were improved amenities, cleanliness, and overall ambiance, all of which have garnered positive traveler responses since the renovations. LaGuardia was also awarded by the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey in 2023, placing it alongside Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport as a top performer for passenger satisfaction.
The renovation, which began in 2016, saw the debut of LaGuardia’s spacious Terminal B in 2020, offering modern amenities and New York-centric dining options. Terminal C, completed in 2022, brought further enhancements, including expanded security lanes and a Delta SkyClub lounge. Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton praised the transformation, noting that the upgrades bring LaGuardia up to a global standard.
LaGuardia’s recognition follows its UNESCO Prix Versailles award in 2021 and a 5-star Skytrax rating for Terminal B in 2023.
