Police arrested a Lakewood man Monday night after he threatened to kill several people and made a bias-related remark during a confrontation in the street.

Officers responded around 9:02 p.m. to Ocean Avenue and Congress Street after multiple 911 callers reported a man pointing what appeared to be a firearm. Officers S. Ward and S. Brooks arrived and located a man dressed in all black arguing with another individual in the roadway.

Police identified the man as Eric Hernandez-Sanchez, 29, of Lakewood. Officers detained him at the scene and searched the area. They did not find a firearm.

Witnesses and victims told officers that Hernandez-Sanchez made several threats to kill and uttered a bias-related statement. Multiple people said he brandished an object that resembled a gun while making the threats.

Officers could not confirm that Hernandez-Sanchez held or possessed a weapon.

Police charged him with second-degree bias intimidation. Authorities lodged him in Ocean County Jail.

Attorney information was not immediately available Tuesday morning.
