On July 6, 2024, a shocking incident of animal cruelty occurred at Morey’s Pier located at 2501 Boardwalk Avenue in North Wildwood, NJ. The North Wildwood Police Department responded to reports of a man allegedly beheading a seagull. Witnesses identified the suspect as 29-year-old Franklin Zeigler from Cape May, NJ.
According to witnesses and police reports, the incident occurred after a seagull stole French fries from Zeigler’s daughter. This resulted in Zeigler decapitating the bird. During the investigation, Zeigler was “irate” and “uncooperative” during the investigation, his behavior led to his arrest on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. These charges are classified as disorderly persons offenses.
The incident was further investigated by Detective Deritis, who also serves as the department’s Humane Law Enforcement Officer. The follow-up investigation involved reviewing statements from Zeigler, witness accounts, and available photographs. As a result, Zeigler was additionally charged with third-degree animal cruelty.
Zeigler was placed on a summons for these charges and released, pending a future court date. The police department emphasized that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
