A New Jersey man faces federal charges after engaging in a violent and disruptive outburst during a flight from Miami to Newark.

According to a press release, Luis A. Vaquero, 27, of Passaic County, made disturbing comments and threats toward passengers, flight attendants, and crew members. He allegedly threatened a disabled minor with physical harm, mocked a group of Jewish passengers, and exchanged violent remarks with a flight attendant who refused to serve him more alcohol after the beverage service ended. Vaquero reportedly warned the attendant, “something’s going to happen to you.” His actions prompted significant concern among those onboard. It led flight attendants to take immediate action in an attempt to calm the situation.

As the flight neared Newark Liberty International Airport on February 9, 2025, Vaquero’s behavior escalated. He banged on the cockpit door, demanding the pilot come out, and continued shouting for the captain to confront him. When the captain emerged, Vaquero continued his tirade, making further threats while standing just inches from the captain.

Upon landing at Newark Liberty International Airport, the FBI arrested Vaquero on charges of interfering with flight crew members by assault or intimidation. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Acting U.S. Attorney Vikas Khanna reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prosecuting anyone who jeopardizes the safety of flight professionals.

“This harrowing incident, along with similar recent cases, creates fear and tension for both passengers and crew,” said Acting Special Agent in Charge Terence G. Reilly. “FBI Newark has a warning—breaking federal law has serious consequences.”

Vaquero appeared in Newark federal court and was released. The FBI led the investigation, with assistance from the Port Authority Police Department.

The charges remain accusations, and Vaquero is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
