New Jersey secured more than $22 billion in federal funding for fiscal year 2024, a 56% increase from pre-pandemic levels, according to a new state report. The money supports 609 state-run programs, with Medicaid, school meals, and violence prevention efforts among the largest beneficiaries.
Medicaid took the biggest slice at $13.9 billion, covering health care costs for low-income residents. With health care expenses rising, the funding helps keep services stable, but some experts warn that long-term costs could outpace available resources.
School meal programs received a significant boost, ensuring free or low-cost breakfast and lunch for students statewide. While federal funding has helped sustain these programs, school officials say they need more to expand eligibility and improve meal quality.
Violence prevention programs also saw federal support, directing funds toward community intervention, domestic violence resources, and law enforcement initiatives. Some advocates argue that while the investment is important, more targeted funding is needed for youth violence prevention.
Other major allocations include preschool programs, environmental conservation efforts, and cancer prevention initiatives. The state’s Grants Management Office, which tracks and helps secure federal funds, compiled the report to provide transparency on where the money is going.
“Securing this federal funding is critical to boosting programs that make New Jersey a stronger, fairer, and safer place to live,” said Governor Phil Murphy.
While the funding provides crucial support, some programs face uncertainty as costs rise and demand increases. State officials say they will continue pushing for additional federal dollars to sustain and grow these services.
