NJ Dog Sitters Killed Dog Under Their Care

by Alondra Cabrera

Craig and Kalli Cooke, dog sitters from Whitehouse Station in Readington Township, NJ, are currently under an open criminal investigation following disturbing allegations of animal abuse. The case escalated after a dog in their care was allegedly shot and killed. The incident on August 12 sparked outrage and triggered multiple claims of abuse against the couple.

The Cookes, who have been operating as dog sitters through platforms like Rover, are now facing accusations from several pet owners. These owners claimed their dogs suffered injuries, illnesses, or worse while under the couple’s supervision. Despite these allegations, the Cookes continued to operate their dog-sitting business. The situation raised concerns about how well Rover manages its platform.

The Readington Township Police Department and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office are actively investigating the case. Authorities urge anyone with additional information or personal experiences with the Cookes to contact the Readington Police Department Detective Bureau at 908-534-4031.

Following the incident, numerous pet owners shared their own troubling experiences. Some reported their dogs returning home with serious injuries, such as broken jaws and teeth. Others have described severe illnesses requiring veterinary attention. Despite multiple reports filed against the Cookes, Rover allegedly dismissed these complaints. Which allowed the couple to continue caring for people’s pets.

Craig and Kalli Cooke defended their actions. They claimed that the shooting occurred because of a dog fight between the victim and another large male dog. However, a vet report obtained by authorities contradicts this account, suggesting that pellet bullets may have caused the injuries , not dog bites. The authorities seized the firearm involved in the incident as evidence.

Pet owners should share any relevant information or personal stories about their experiences with the Cookes to aid in the ongoing investigation. Anonymous tips can be sent to [email protected]. The Readington Township Police Department plans to release further statements as the investigation progresses.
