The threat of flash floods is present in New Jersey in 17 counties on Monday as heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to sweep across most of the state.
The National Weather Service issued a flood watch from 2 p.m from Monday through midnight and potentially beyond. Forecasters say storms could drop three to five inches of rain.
The day began with mild temperatures and scattered showers in parts of northern NJ, but stronger storms are forecast to develop in the early afternoon. The heaviest downpours are expected to form north and west before moving toward the coast by the evening commute.
Low-lying areas, including roads and storm drains, could flood quickly if storms stall. Officials urge residents to monitor conditions and be ready to take shelter if warnings are issued.
In addition to heavy rain, forecasters say damaging winds are a threat, mainly near the Delaware River in western New Jersey.
Storms are expected to taper off overnight, but isolated showers could linger into Tuesday. Temperatures will remain warm and humid all week, with more storms possible Wednesday and Friday as highs climb into the 90s.
