Latest Polling: Sherrill Maintains Lead, NJ Governor’s Race Still Competitive

The latest Rutgers/Eagleton poll shows Representative Mikie Sherrill (D) holding a nine-point lead over Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli. Despite the advantage, pollsters noted that a large share of voters remain undecided, with 17 percent of likely voters still weighing their options. The poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

Ashley Koning, director of the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, said the 2025 governor’s race remains competitive because of the high number of undecideds. “Sherrill still has the edge, but the important thing to take away here is that the race is competitive and will continue to be in flux, in large part because there are still a notable number of undecideds,” Koning said in a statement.

The nine-point gap marks a narrowing since last month, when the same poll gave Sherrill a 20-point advantage—a result Ciattarelli’s campaign dismissed as inaccurate.

The outcome may hinge on independents, as partisans appear firmly aligned. Eighty-five percent of Democrats said they would back Sherrill, while 81 percent of Republicans said they would vote for Ciattarelli.
