A lifeguard was hospitalized Wednesday morning after being impaled by a beach umbrella at the Jersey Shore.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. near the Third Avenue beach in Asbury Park. Officials believe a gust of wind knocked the woman from her lifeguard chair, causing her to land on the pointed end of an unsecured umbrella.

The umbrella stake pierced through the front of her left shoulder and exited out her back. Fellow lifeguards provided aid until firefighters and EMS arrived. Responders cut the pole to stabilize the injury before transporting her to a nearby hospital.

The victim was conscious and alert throughout. She remains hospitalized.

“She’s a tough young woman,” said Asbury Park Fire Chief Kevin Keddy.

Authorities urged beachgoers to secure umbrellas firmly in the sand and carry them with the point facing down.
