Strong winds knocked out power to thousands of reesidents across parts of New Jersey, Connecticut and New York on Monday, toppling trees and utility poles in several areas.

One trouble spot was North Cooks Bridge Road in Jackson, where multiple poles were pulled down. Utility companies urged residents to avoid downed power lines and report outages.

According to PowerOutage.us, more than 35,000 customers in New Jersey lost power. Monmouth County reported 7,866 outages, while Ocean County had nearly 5,000.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the entire state until 6 p.m., warning of sustained winds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Officials said the high winds resulted from a pressure gradient between two opposing systems over the region.

Gusts are expected to weaken later Monday night, but conditions will remain cold, with high temperatures struggling to reach the 30s throughout the week.
