New Jersey residents face mounting frustration as Real ID appointment slots vanish across the state.

Starting May 7, travelers must present a Real ID or another federally accepted form of identification to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings. But as of this week, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s (NJMVC) website showed zero available Real ID appointments, while tens of thousands of other appointments for routine services like license renewals were still open.

Many residents are unaware that they can upgrade to a Real ID during a regular license renewal. For those whose licenses fall within the renewal window, upgrading to a Real ID is an option during their appointment. But confusion and limited availability have pushed many to social media to vent their frustration.

“No Real ID appointments anywhere in the state,” one person wrote on X.

“No appointments available in NJ at ANY of DMV offices for the Real ID… Thanks @GovMurphy,” another posted.

The NJMVC claims it adds 3,000 new Real ID appointments each weekday at 7 a.m. and recently introduced “REAL ID Thursdays,” which open nearly 4,500 additional slots weekly at licensing centers. Despite these efforts, residents report that available appointments disappear within minutes of being posted.

How to Secure a Real ID Appointment

To get a Real ID, it’s best to book early. Check the NJMVC website right when the new slots are added at 7 a.m. each weekday. Being one of the first to check may give you a better chance at securing an appointment. If you’re unable to get a Real ID appointment in time, you can still use a valid passport to meet federal identification requirements. However, keep in mind that expedited passport processing takes two to three weeks, and additional fees apply.

Some states have AAA branches that offer Real ID services, but unfortunately, New Jersey is not one of them. If you live near a state border or are planning to travel, it’s worth contacting a nearby AAA branch to see if they can help.

What Documents You’ll Need

To apply for a Real ID, you’ll need to bring several documents: two proofs of New Jersey residency. For example, utility bills, bank statements; one proof of your Social Security number, such as a Social Security card or tax document; and a combination of documents totaling six points of ID, such as a birth certificate, passport, or current U.S. driver’s license.

What’s Next?

The federal deadline is fast approaching, and with no sign of another delay, those without a passport or DMV appointment face limited options and mounting frustration. Keep checking the NJMVC website for updated availability and be ready to act quickly when new slots open.
