A Cape May County elementary school teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting a former student and giving birth to his child, authorities said Wednesday.
Laura Caron, 34, a fifth-grade teacher at Middle Township Elementary School, is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with the boy when he lived in her home between 2016 and 2020, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors allege the relationship began after Caron taught the victim and his siblings in the fifth grade. The family initially allowed the children to stay at Caron’s house for occasional sleepovers before they moved in permanently.
The alleged abuse began when the victim was 11, investigators said. The boy’s sister told authorities she recalled sharing a room with her brother but would sometimes find him in Caron’s bed. Another sibling reportedly witnessed Caron assaulting the boy while he slept.
Caron gave birth to a child in 2019, authorities said. The student’s father noticed a resemblance between the teacher’s child and his son in a social media post in December 2024. The teen, now 19 or 20, later confirmed to investigators that he fathered the child.
Caron was arrested at her home on January 15 and charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. She is being held without bond at the Cape May County Correctional Facility.
“This arrest underscores the unwavering commitment of our office and law enforcement partners to protect the children in our community,” Prosecutor Jeffery Sutherland said in a statement. “Teachers hold a position of great trust, and the allegations in this case represent a deeply troubling breach of that trust.”
The investigation is ongoing.
