NJ Transit Is Free This Week, What You Need to Know

by Staff

TRENTON, N.J. — NJ Transit will offer free rides on its buses, trains, and light rail services for one week beginning today, August 26. The fare-free initiative is part of an effort to encourage public transportation usage across the state.

This “fare holiday” will last until September 2. During this period, passengers can ride without purchasing tickets. The initiative covers all NJ Transit services, including buses, trains, and light rail.

Governor Murphy described the move as a way to provide financial relief to New Jersey residents while promoting the use of public transit. NJ Transit officials also emphasized that the fare-free week aims to attract new riders and reward regular commuters.

This marks the first time NJ Transit has offered such an extensive fare-free period. The state expects a significant increase in ridership during the week, with additional staff on hand to manage the anticipated surge.

For those who have already purchased monthly passes for August, you will be able to receive a 25% discount on a September pass as reimbursement when purchasing through the mobile app, at Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs), or ticket windows.
