An NJ Transit train struck a vehicle on the tracks at the Pomona Road crossing Tuesday night at 8:19 p.m., officials said.

The car sat unoccupied at the time of impact. Police said the driver, a Ventnor man, had been traveling north on Pomona Road when he mistakenly turned onto the tracks instead of the nearest cross street. The car got stuck while he attempted a U-turn. Unable to move it, the driver abandoned the car and ran to safety moments before the NJ Transit train struck the vehicle.

Train 4639, part of the Atlantic City Rail Line, had left Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station at 7:03 p.m. and was scheduled to reach Atlantic City by 8:37 p.m. The train collided with the vehicle just as passengers neared the final leg of their journey. The impact scattered debris, but the train stayed on course.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, but NJ Transit reported no injuries among the 33 passengers and crew members aboard. The car remained on the tracks as officials assessed the situation.

The New Jersey Transit Police are investigating the incident and working to determine how the driver ended up on the tracks.
