A wildfire in Wharton State Forest has burned 5,750 acres since it began Friday, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Officials said on Sunday the blaze is 80 percent contained. Five structures remain threatened.

The fire prompted evacuations at Lower Forge Campground and forced the closure of nearby roads and trails. It was first reported near the Carranza Memorial in the forest.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The blaze was first discovered when a private aircraft reported smoke early on Friday, leading to emergency response teams. Firefighters launched helicopters initially in an effort to drop water on the fire. Despite the response, the fire continued to grow throughout the day but is now on its way to being fully contained.
