The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) released a report Monday detailing possible risks offshore wind farms could pose to marine life and the fishing industry in New Jersey and Long Island waters.
The environmental impact statement identifies risks to whales, dolphins, birds, and other wildlife, especially during wind farm construction. Underwater noise from pile-driving was found to pose potential harm to marine mammals, including the risk of permanent hearing damage for whales. Additionally, vessel strikes related to construction and operation could increase injury and mortality risks for these species.
Bats and birds may also be affected by the moving turbines, the report notes, with potential fatalities from collisions.
BOEM indicated that commercial fishing could face disruptions, potentially leading to income losses for fishermen. The report details potential changes in vessel patterns and risks of gear entanglement.
While BOEM acknowledges “unavoidable adverse impacts” even with measures like monitoring and mitigation, it stated that effects on species populations are likely temporary. BOEM cited no direct link between offshore wind activities and whale strandings along the New Jersey and New York coastlines, noting instead that most incidents result from vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglements.
Local response to the report remains divided. Congressman Chris Smith, a critic of offshore wind projects, said the federal government has “gaslighted” the public by downplaying these environmental impacts. He called for an independent audit on the issue. Conservation groups have also raised concerns, some pursuing legal action to halt the projects.
BOEM emphasized that the report stems from five public meetings and environmental forums held from 2022 to 2024, including feedback from local communities and stakeholders.
