Orionids Meteor Shower on Rooftop of River House

Danielle Lane

River House at Odette’s, located in New Hope, PA, is hosting its first-ever Stargazing Event Series. , during the Orionids Meteor Shower. The Stargazing Event will be held on October 21st and 22nd when the meteor shower is most visible, so there is plenty of opportunity to see it in all its planetary splendor as it passes through our solar system. It lasts from 7:30-9:00 PM and is completely free to be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

This evening will be hosted by the co-author of “30 Second Space Travel,” previous Loomis-Michael observatory operator for Harvard Astronomy Club President and expert of the stars, Allen Liu. Allen has hosted several public star-gazing events for astronomy lovers of all ages.

NASA explains that this visually stunning event occurs every year when Earth passes through leftover debris from Halley’s Comet. As a result, the sky is filled with what looks like dozens of shooting stars in the span of minutes. Anywhere between 10 and 20 Oniorids will be visible per hour at their peak. There will be plenty of opportunities to get a glimpse of its beauty. Allen will bring his trusty travel telescope for participants to get a closer look.

River House at Odette’s is an elegant yet cozy hotel nestled along the Delaware river. It has hosted guests since 1794 serving primarily boatmen as a stopover. The hotel eventually closed down due to inactivity and later on had a resurgence in 1961. It has since been renovated into the beautiful property it is today.

In addition to the comet show, guests will be offered food and drinks from a specialty stargazing event menu. The treats and cocktails will be astronomy-themed to fit the vibe of the night. Here are some delights they will serve to give a taste of what’s to come.

Don’t Miss Cocktail of the Evening

The first is “Stardust,” a mix of Vodka, Rosemary Syrup, Prosecco, and lemon. They shake in edible gold glitter to top it off, which looks like a storm of glitter in a champagne glass. They’re also serving a beverage that layers Guinness, creme de menthe, and Prosseco, a play on a Black Velvet which they coined the “Eclipse.” Finally, there is the Nebula, their version of a New York Sour, with Bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup, egg whites, and red wine. To accompany these fabulous cocktails, they’re also preparing chocolate passionfruit constellation tarts. With all of these goodies, It is unlikely you will leave this event feeling unappreciated.
