A Jersey City couple faces child endangerment charges after leaving their two young children alone in a Brigantine home during Memorial Day weekend, authorities said.

Police responded just before 9 p.m. Sunday to a residence on the 4900 block of Harbor Beach Boulevard following a report from a concerned citizen. The person flagged down an officer on patrol and alerted them to the situation involving unattended juveniles.

Officers arrived and discovered an 8-year-old and a 1-year-old inside the home without any adult supervision. The children remained alone while their parents were not at or near the property.

Police contacted the children’s parents, Felix Y. Rodriguez, 43, and Lydia Monterrosa, 38, both from Jersey City. Neither was present at the time, but both returned after being instructed by officers.

When Rodriguez and Monterrosa arrived, officers observed signs that the pair had been drinking.

Police charged the couple with endangering the welfare of a child. Both were issued summonses and released, with a court appearance scheduled in Atlantic County Superior Court.

Authorities have not released information about the children’s current condition or custody. The investigation into the incident remains active.
