Lystn LLC, the owner of Answers Pet Food, has initiated a recall of several dog food products after testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed the presence of salmonella and listeria. The recall, announced on Sept. 22, includes ANSWERS Detailed Beef Formula for Dogs, ANSWERS Straight Beef Formula for Dogs, and ANSWERS Straight Chicken Formula for Dogs.
The products were sold in four-pound cartons through retail stores and online. No illnesses have been reported to date, but the contamination poses potential risks to both pets and humans, particularly those who handle the food without proper hygiene.
According to the FDA, while listeria rarely causes illness in dogs, it can still spread from pets to humans, primarily through contact with pet saliva or stool. Symptoms of listeria in humans can range from mild, flu-like effects to more severe infections, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, listeria can cause miscarriages or stillbirths.
Salmonella, on the other hand, can cause both pets and humans to experience symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Healthy pets infected with salmonella may not show symptoms but can still spread the bacteria.
Lystn LLC has advised pet owners to discard any affected products. The FDA recommends thorough handwashing after handling pet food and cleaning any surfaces that may have come into contact with the contaminated products.
For a refund, customers should provide proof of purchase and submit a photo of the recalled product to [email protected].
