Pink Moon to Rise Over New Jersey Saturday Night

The pink moon will rise over New Jersey on Saturday, April 12, casting a warm glow as the first full moon of spring lights up the eastern sky.

The moon will reach full phase at 8:22 p.m. EDT, aligning closely with moonrise at 7:31 p.m. and sunset at 7:32 p.m. The timing gives skywatchers a rare chance to see the moon at its most dramatic—just as it clears the horizon.

Despite its name, the pink moon won’t actually turn pink. The name originates from the vibrant creeping phlox, a wildflower that blooms in early spring across parts of North America. In addition to the pink moon, other traditional names for this April full moon include the sprouting grass moon, fish moon, and egg moon, each reflecting nature’s awakening at this time of year.

April’s full moon occurs when Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon. That lineup reflects the sun’s light fully off the lunar surface, making the moon look especially bright. But once high in the sky, the light becomes harsh and washed out.

Best Time and Place for Viewing the Pink Moon

The best time to view the full moon is during moonrise, when it hangs low and casts a muted orange glow. Earth’s atmosphere filters out shorter blue wavelengths of light near the horizon, leaving only reds and oranges—similar to a sunset.

To make the most of it, find an open spot facing east. Look for high ground, a backyard, or a park free from tall trees and buildings. No special equipment is needed, though binoculars or a telescope will reveal more surface detail.

The moon will remain full through Sunday night and appear 98% full Friday night, offering a few chances to catch the view—if the weather holds up. Cloud cover could block the pink moon show in New Jersey, with mostly cloudy skies expected Friday and Saturday night. Skies may clear partially by Sunday.
