President Joe Biden has called for significant reforms to the U.S. Supreme Court, citing concerns over its recent decisions and perceived partisanship.
In a statement on Monday, Biden emphasized the need for changes to ensure the court operates fairly and independently. He proposed measures including term limits for justices and increased transparency in the court’s operations.
Biden’s call for reform comes amid growing criticism of the Supreme Court’s decisions on key issues. The President stressed that these changes are essential for maintaining public trust in the judiciary.
Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democratic leaders have expressed support for Biden’s proposals. The initiative is expected to face strong opposition from Republicans and conservative groups.
The White House plans to work with Congress to draft legislation addressing the proposed reforms.
In an opinion piece posted to The Washington Post, Biden writes: “This nation was founded on a simple yet profound principle: No one is above the law. Not the president of the United States. Not a justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. No one.”
He continues on to reference the recent Presidential Immunity decision by SCOTUS, stating: “But the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision on July 1 to grant presidents broad immunity from prosecution for crimes they commit in office means there are virtually no limits on what a president can do.”
