18 puppies were found roaming a Rahway neighborhood nearly two weeks ago. Local police are still looking for whoever left them there.

The mixed-breed pit bull puppies—believed to be about four months old—were discovered on June 20 on Jefferson Avenue, according to The Central Jerseyan

Concerned residents gathered the puppies and secured them inside a nearby home until Animal Control arrived. Witnesses reported seeing a gray SUV in the area shortly before the puppies were discovered. The Rahway Police Department is investigating the incident as a possible abandonment.

The 18 puppies are now in the care of Common Sense for Animals, a shelter in Stewartsville, New Jersey. Shelter employee Lauren Kot told The Central Jerseyan that some of the puppies arrived underweight with skin and stomach issues. As of this week, they are eating and healing well.

Because the puppies are part of an active court case, they cannot be adopted out yet, but the shelter is actively seeking foster homes, according to ABC7.  Nearly half have already been placed with foster families. Foster families should be prepared for a commitment of anywhere from two weeks to two months or more. Anyone interested can call Common Sense for Animals at 908-859-3060.

Anyone with information on the abandonment is encouraged to contact the Rahway Police Department directly.
