A new true-crime series reveals that a former Menudo member has accused José Menendez, the father of Lyle and Erik Menendez, of sexually assaulting him while the family lived in New Jersey.
Lyle and Erik Menendez have been serving life sentences for the 1989 murders of their parents in Beverly Hills. In their defense, the brothers claimed they endured years of abuse at home, but prosecutors argued there was no proof of molestation. Much of their testimony about sexual abuse was excluded from their second trial, and the state’s case centered on the brothers’ alleged motive to inherit their parents’ fortune.
In the 2023 series Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed, Roy Rosselló, a former member of the 1980s boy band Menudo, says José Menendez assaulted him when he was a teenager at Menendez’s home in Mercer County, New Jersey.
José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez were found shot to death in their Beverly Hills mansion in August 1989. Before moving to California, the family lived for about 16 years near Hopewell Township. Both Lyle and Erik attended Princeton Day School, and Lyle briefly enrolled at Princeton University in 1987.
Lyle was 22 and Erik 19 at the time of the murders. Their first trial ended in a mistrial in 1994. Prosecutors maintained the brothers killed their parents for financial gain, while the defense argued the killings were in self-defense after years of abuse.
