A significant winter storm is poised to hit New Jersey on Sunday, and could drop 4 to 6 inches of snow across much of the state, followed by dangerously cold temperatures next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters noted Friday morning that the greatest accumulation of snow is likely to hit along the i-95 corridor, pointing north and west.

Snowfall projections south and east of I-95 are slightly lower, with totals of 2 to 4 inches predicted. Coastal regions near the Jersey Shore and Delaware Bay may see only 1 to 2 inches. Snowfall rates could reach up to 1 inch per hour, beginning as early as Sunday morning and tapering off by evening.

Private forecasting service AccuWeather aligns with the National Weather Service’s predictions, estimating 3 to 6 inches of snow for areas north and west of I-95. The company warns that snow-covered, slippery roads will likely disrupt travel.

Cold Temperatures to Follow

Once the storm clears late Sunday, the state will face an Arctic chill. Monday’s high temperatures are expected to reach only the 20s, while Tuesday and Wednesday highs will drop to the teens. Overnight lows in single digits, coupled with wind chill values below zero, will create hazardous conditions.

Forecasters caution that this marks the coldest stretch of weather since January 2018, with widespread single-digit lows and sub-zero wind chills. Temperatures may rebound slightly by Thursday but are expected to remain below freezing.

Weekend Weather Overview

Friday and Saturday will provide a brief respite before the storm arrives. Friday will be calm and seasonable, with sunny skies and highs near 40 degrees. Saturday will see light rain showers during the afternoon, with highs in the mid-40s.

The storm system, set to move through on Sunday, is expected to deliver accumulating snow across much of the state. Areas north and west of the Turnpike may experience higher totals, depending on the storm’s final track.

Forecasters urge residents to monitor updates as the storm approaches and prepare for challenging travel conditions and frigid temperatures in the days ahead.
