For a show that made New Jersey famous in ways the state’s tourism board couldn’t dream of, The Sopranos is finally getting the visual treatment it deserves.
According to IGN, HBO is releasing a full 4K Ultra HD remaster of the series in a limited-edition box set on December 8, and for fans of the show—especially those who live in the state where it was shot—it’s some of the best Sopranos news since the booth in the famous final scene went up for auction.
The complete series set spans all 86 episodes across 28 discs, packaged in a hardcover lay-flat book featuring the cast in full-color spreads. It’s currently available for preorder at $149.99. Whether the 4K Sopranos remaster finds its way to HBO Max remains to be seen.
What Sopranos Means to New Jersey
The Sopranos was filmed almost entirely in New Jersey. Tony’s house sits in North Caldwell, Satriale’s Pork Store in Kearny, the Bada Bing is a real strip club in Lodi—Satin Dolls—that still draws Sopranos tourists looking for a photo. The show turned the Turnpike, the Pine Barrens, and the suburban sprawl of Essex County into something more cinematic than its residents knew possible. Seeing it in 4K offers a chance to see the state rendered with the clarity it was always filmed with, but never quite delivered on home video.
The bonus disc package is notable as well. New to this release is a David Chase featurette, with a final title still to be determined. Also included is Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos, the two-part HBO documentary directed by Academy Award winner Alex Gibney. Legacy bonus material from previous DVD and Blu-ray releases rounds out the set—original behind-the-scenes features and audio commentaries with Chase, cast members, writers, and directors.
There’s no word yet on whether a non-limited edition will follow or whether the 4K remaster will be released in any additional formats beyond the physical DVD set.
For now, preorders are live. December 8 can’t come fast enough for fans of one of television’s greatest shows ever produced.
