Summit, New Jersey was just named one of the 20 best suburbs in the country for people tired of city living, according to a new list from HGTV compiled with the help of Suburban Jungle.
The Union County town was the sole New Jersey suburb to make the cut, which spans 20 communities across the country—from Chappaqua and Larchmont in New York to Greenwich and Westport in Connecticut, and stretching as far as Mill Valley, California and Boca Raton, Florida.
Why Summit Made the Cut
“Summit, New Jersey, is one of the most sought-after communities in New Jersey, which has become increasingly popular with Manhattan commuters over the last two decades,” said Allison Levine, Suburban Jungle New York strategist.
The recognition centers on Summit’s vibrant downtown—packed with top restaurants, cafes, and shopping—alongside its appeal to both families and young professionals.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the 30-acre Briant Park and 70-acre Hidden Valley Park offer hiking and biking without ever leaving town. For commuters, Summit sits on NJ Transit’s Midtown Direct line, making a commute to Manhattan seamless.
The Broader Trend
Summit’s recognition reflects a broader trend of New Jersey suburbs drawing attention from those looking to escape New York City—particularly those priced out or simply looking for more space with the same access. Summit checks both boxes: it has the walkable downtown feel of a small city and the transit infrastructure needed for Manhattan commutes.
For Summit, the recognition is well-earned. It is now officially one of America’s best suburbs.
