The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a major portion of President Donald Trump’s global tariff policy in a 6-3 decision on Friday. The ruling overturns the use of a 1977 emergency trade law to impose broad import taxes—an unprecedented move.
New Jersey businesses, which operate across manufacturing, logistics, ports, retail, and technology, now face a shifting trade landscape.
Tariffs had raised costs across many sectors. Those costs usually get passed down to the consumer. The NJ Chamber of Commerce cautions that the full economic impact is still largely uncertain.
In a statement, Tom Bracken, President & CEO, New Jersey Chamber of Commerce said “New Jersey companies operate in complex supply chains that span manufacturing, logistics, retail, pharmaceuticals, technology, and port operations. Any major shift in federal trade policy can have ripple effects across pricing, investment decisions, and competitiveness. Until we have greater clarity on how the administration and Congress may respond, and how markets adjust, predicting the ultimate outcome would be premature.”
Governor Mikie Sherrill welcomed the decision, saying it could ease burdens on New Jersey businesses. In a social media post, Sherrill stated: “These illegal tariffs have raised New Jerseyans’ costs by $1,700 per family, while devastating small businesses and job growth.” The White House, however, argued the tariffs promoted “fair trade” and strategic economic goals. Trump criticized the ruling, calling some justices—including ones appointed by him—a “disgrace.”
Federal data shows the tariffs had generated more than $133 billion in revenue for the federal government by December. However, the funds are rarely seen by the average consumer. A Yale study estimated the average U.S. family lost $1,751 last year due to tariff-related price increases.
The Chamber of Commerce will continue monitoring the fallout and working with policymakers to ensure New Jersey companies remain competitive in a rapidly changing trade environment.
For now, Trump’s signature tariff policy is struck down.
