Tri-Union Seafoods has issued a voluntary recall of select canned tuna products sold in New Jersey due to a potential risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination. The company announced the recall on February 7, 2025, and the FDA published the notice on February 10, 2025.
The affected products, sold under the Trader Joe’s, Genova, and Van Camp’s brands, may have compromised seals due to a defect in the “easy open” pull-tab lids. The issue, identified by a supplier, could lead to leaks or bacterial contamination. This poses a serious health risk. Botulism is a rare but potentially fatal illness that can cause paralysis, difficulty breathing, and, in severe cases, death.
No illnesses linked to the recalled products have been reported, but Tri-Union Seafoods is urging consumers to take precautions. The affected tuna was distributed at Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and independent retailers in New Jersey. Customers who purchased Trader Joe’s tuna, Genova 5-ounce tuna, and Van Camp’s tuna should check the can codes, UPC numbers, and best-by dates to determine if their items are part of the recall. Consumers should not eat the recalled tuna, even if it looks or smells normal. Instead, they should return it to the store for a full refund or dispose of it immediately. Tri-Union Seafoods is also offering retrieval kits and replacement coupons for those who contact the company directly.
