Shoppers may finally get some relief at the grocery store.
In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Walmart’s CFO, John David Rainey, says there are strong signs that food inflation is slowing, and in some cases, prices could noticeably drop. Eggs, milk, and fresh produce—key items on grocery lists—are already costing less than they did a year ago, signaling a possible boost for families’ budgets this spring.
The retail giant reported strong quarterly results despite a conservative outlook for the year. Both Walmart and Sam’s Club saw double-digit growth in e-commerce sales.
The company also announced a $30 billion stock buyback plan. While first-quarter earnings came in slightly below Wall Street expectations, Rainey emphasized that the business outlook is healthy and resilient.
He points to food prices as a crucial factor for shoppers. “Egg prices have come down appreciably from where they were a year ago … So we’re continuing to look to see that food prices could come down. And it’s really important for us because fresh as an item in produce is something that’s a basket driver,” he said. “We see that when someone’s buying fresh in our stores, baskets tend to be about 25% higher. So that level of engagement and that additional level of spend is really important to our bottom line.”
However, not all groceries are dropping. According to Seafood Source, the price of seafood is increasing even as other costs ease. A combination of environmental factors and inflation have caused prices to rise—with double-digit percentage increases posted across the U.S.
Analysts are watching food inflation closely. If it continues to ease, consumers could feel more confident using tax refunds and extra cash to stock up on groceries, potentially driving overall retail sales upwards in the coming months.
The era of steep food inflation may finally be easing, offering a rare bit of relief for grocery bills nationwide.
