Fast-food giant Wendy’s is gearing up to axe hundreds of underperforming American eateries over the coming months, including a potential ripple effect on the Garden State’s 200-plus locations. The Dublin, Ohio-based burger chain revealed the aggressive overhaul during a Friday investor call, aiming to shed outdated spots and supercharge profits at surviving stores.

With 6,011 U.S. restaurants on the books at the close of Q3, Wendy’s hinted that a “mid-single-digit percentage” of sites face the chopping block. Crunch the numbers at 5% and roughly 300 doors could swing shut nationwide—piling onto 240 closures already executed in 2024.

Why Close Shops in a Burger Boom?

Interim CEO Ken Cook, who stepped into the top job in July after predecessor Kirk Tanner jumped ship to Hershey Co., laid it out plain: some outlets drag down the brand and bleed franchisee wallets.

“When we look at the system today, we have some restaurants that do not elevate the brand and are a drag from a franchisee financial performance perspective. The goal is to address and fix those restaurants,” Cook said during an investors conference call.

The fix-it playbook runs three routes: tech upgrades and fresh gear for salvageable spots, ownership handoffs to stronger operators, or outright padlocks. Many of the 55-year-old chain’s aging buildings simply can’t keep pace with modern drive-thru demands or digital ordering flows.

Inflation Bites Lower-Income Diners

U.S. quick-service chains have watched budget-conscious guests vanish as menu prices climb. Cook warned that cash-strapped customers will stay squeezed through year-end. Proof sits in the numbers: Wendy’s U.S. same-store sales slid 4% across the first nine months versus 2023, with revenue dipping 2% to $1.63 billion and net income off 6% to $138.6 million.

Value meals are fighting back—$5 and $8 bundles mirrored by arch-rival McDonald’s have lured some traffic. Yet Cook admitted the chain lags at reeling in first-time visitors. Expect a marketing pivot spotlighting wallet-friendly deals and never-frozen beef.

Wall Street Reacts

Investors hit the sell button: shares plunged 7% Friday and shed another 5% in Monday afternoon trading.

What About New Jersey?

Wendy’s operates more than 200 Garden State locations, from urban Newark outposts to suburban strip-mall staples. Corporate brass stayed mum on specific closures, leaving franchisees and frostys fans in limbo. The chain’s older units—think 1980s-era builds along Routes 1, 3, and 46—fit the “out-of-date” profile flagged for review.
