Hidden small towns can be found all throughout the Garden State. From central Jersey all the way down to the shore, WorldAtlas recently explored small towns in New Jersey in order to determine which ones have the best attractions to offer. Whether they’re historical displays or peaceful getaways, here are eight small towns with charm in New Jersey.
Cape May

All the way down at the southern tip of New Jersey lies the small beach town of Cape May. Their Victorian architecture, serene beaches and cultural highlights cause it to stand out in the Jersey shore. The Cape May Lighthouse makes it notable for both locals and visitors, especially during a nice sunset.
Lambertville
The small town of Lambertville, just above Trenton, lays along the Delaware River. Shoppers and collectors can find various vintage gifts at the town’s notable antique shops such as The People’s Store and Bridge Street Antiques. The weekends in Lambertville come alive at the Golden Nugget Antique Flea Market, where more than 200 vendors line the streets.
Clinton
The home of the Red Mill Museum Village contains multiple different historic attractions and artifacts to learn about their industrial past. Some noteworthy photo spots include Clinton’s truss bridge with its unique riverside views.
Princeton

Other than the Ivy-League University, Princeton also features multiple different independent shops and art museums. You can find sweet treats at The Bent Spoon on Palmer Square. Which is an artisanal ice cream shop known for seasonal, creative flavors. In the winter, The Bent Spoon offers one of NJ’s best hot chocolates.
Frenchtown
Located alongside the Delaware River, a trip to Frenchtown makes the perfect outdoor day. The Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park Trail provides a scenic route that is good for both cycling and walking. Handcrafted jewelry can be found at different boutiques in Frenchtown such as Gemstone Gallery.
Ocean Grove
You can take a picturesque stroll on the boardwalk in Ocean Grove. As the town was founded as a Methodist camp meeting community, their historic district provides ornate Victorian homes with colorful façades and decorative trims–which makes for a great scenic experience.
Red Bank

The town of Red Bank is quite walkable with its Navesink River at Riverside Gardens Park. The park hosts concerts and community events, as well as waterfront views and picnic spots that act as a break from the downtown bustle. If you are more into music, the Count Basie Center for the Arts also hosts different theatre events each year.
Cranbury
If you’re looking for a great festival, Cranbury hosts seasonal events celebrating the small town’s history, such as Cranbury Day in September. The Cranbury Museum, located in a restored 19th-century home, also offers a glimpse into the town’s colonial roots.
