Ocean City, New Jersey has been named one of the 10 best main streets in the United States, according to USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for 2026. It’s the sole Garden State town to make the cut.
The recognition centers on Asbury Avenue, Ocean City’s vibrant downtown strip that runs from 6th to 14th Street. Conveniently positioned between the beach and the bay, the stretch features over 100 specialty stores, boutiques, and cafés that draw both visitors and locals alike throughout the season.
Ocean City as a Destination
Ocean City is one of the Jersey Shore’s most beloved family destinations—its downtown is a big reason why. Asbury Avenue sits at the heart of a town known for its boardwalk, Atlantic views, and vintage amusement parks. Playland’s Castaway Cove, steps from the strip, offers go-karts, roller coasters, a fun house, and mini golf. Miles of relaxing beaches stretch in either direction for those looking to slow things down after a day of shopping down the main ave.
The combination of a walkable main street and easy beach access puts Ocean City in rare company. Apparently, USA Today’s readers agree.
Who Else Made the List
Ocean City came in at No. 7 on the full list, which was compiled through nominations from an expert panel and voted on by readers.
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania took the top spot, recognized for its walkable historic district and proximity to America’s newest UNESCO World Heritage Site. Waynesville, North Carolina came in at No. 2, followed by Emporia, Kansas at No. 3. Notably, our Tri-State neighbors in New York and Connecticut did not make the cut. Read the full list here.
