The U.S. Virgin Islands was named Experiential Destination of the Year at The Caribbean Journal’s 2026 Caribbean Travel Awards, emphasizing the territory’s growing appeal for travelers seeking immersive adventures.
A trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands is hands-on and experience-driven.
Visitors kayak through mangroves, stroll the historic streets of Charlotte Amalie, and enjpy chef’s table dinners at the marina. Day trips to Buck Island and Trunk Bay bring snorkeling, beach time, and eco-adventures that suggest the islands are more than just another vacation spot. Instead, the U.S. territory is a destination built for exploring.
“The recognition reflects the dedication of our tourism partners, hospitality professionals, and local communities,” said Jennifer Matarangas-King, USVI Commissioner of Tourism. “Together, we continue to elevate the U.S. Virgin Islands as a destination that delivers authentic experiences, exceptional service, and unforgettable moments for everyone.”
And that’s only one of three accolades awarded to the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was also named the Caribbean Cruise Destination of the Year, and The Saint on St. John was named New Hotel of the Year. These achievements show that the U.S. Virgin Islands is gaining attention for more than just its picturesque beaches.
For those planning a visit, the islands offer plenty of accessible adventures from St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix—each combining natural beauty, history, and local culture in ways that diversify every trip.
