The Fight to Save Loew’s: A Recap
The Loew’s Jersey Theatre was built in 1929 in Jersey City’s Journal Square. It survived a near-demolition in the 1980s, decades of grassroots preservation efforts, and a four-year closure for major structural work.
The $130 million restoration—a collaboration between the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, the State of New Jersey, and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment—is bringing it back as a full-time live entertainment venue later this year.
Now, for the first time, since structural work began, we get a glimpse into what the reopened theater will look like.
The Grand Lobby
Step through the doors and the true scale of the building’s restoration hits immediately. The grand lobby sets the tone for the entire experience with its soaring ceilings, restored architectural detail, and a sense of arrival that modern venues rarely achieve. It’s the kind of space that makes you appreciate the craftsmanship of old architecture, while firmly grounding you in the modern era with contemporary amenities, access, and more.
The Musician’s Gallery
The musician’s—with its gold damask walls, red velvet curtains, and hand-painted details—looks like it came directly from the Roaring 20s. It will serve as a pre-show reception area and private event space. Enjoy drinks before heading into a show.
The Lower Lounge
The concourse level keeps the vintage palette intact, while functioning as a fully modern pre-show gathering space. It flows naturally between the lobby and the main chamber, giving the venue a sense of movement and energy before curtains even open.
The Main Chamber
The main chamber shines with its gilded arches, draped balconies, red velvet curtain, and hand-painted ceilings. Simply put, it’s breathtaking.
Flexible seating and standing configurations allow the venue to scale between 2,600 and 4,000 guests depending on the event. With advanced sound, lighting, and projection systems running underneath all of that historic grandeur, it’s shaping up to be one of the finest live music venues on the East Coast.
The Performance Setup
With the stage lit and the house full, the Loew’s Jersey Theatre looks exactly like the venue it was always meant to be. The marriage of 1929 architecture and modern production capabilities is seamless, offering a bit of something for everyone.

The Star Dressing Room
Even the backstage gets similar treatment. Designed by Off the Record Collective, the star dressing room feels more like a boutique hotel suite than a green room. Embossed ceiling tiles, warm lighting, rich textures, and custom furnishings make up the body.
The Exterior
The marquee is back. The restored facade glows against the Journal Square lights, ornate stonework and all. It looks exactly like what it is: a 1929 movie palace, given a second lease on life. From the outside, the message is clear—something special is happening inside.
The Loew’s Jersey Theatre is expected to host approximately 150 events annually when it reopens later this year. Expect everything, including live music, comedy, film, and community programming.
After nearly 100 years, Journal Square is getting its landmark back. It was worth the wait.
