Sunset Park will come alive with music and eco-friendly activities on August 30 as the Clearwater Festival marks its 50th year. Running from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the free event is recognized as New Jersey’s oldest celebration blending live performances with environmental education.
“Pete believed that you should attract people with great music and singing and while they’re there, educate them about the need to protect the environment,” Robert Killian said, founder of New Jersey Friends of Clearwater.
The tradition began in 1975 at Sandy Hook, inspired by folk legend Pete Seeger’s call to use music as a tool for activism. Since then, Clearwater has become a summer staple at the Jersey Shore.
“The NJ Clearwater Festival has been following that model every year since 1975 and we’ll be celebrating the half-century mark in beautiful Sunset Park, a block from the ocean, a perfect spot to celebrate our history and renew our commitment to protecting the ecosystem that we all depend on,” added Chrissie Goedkoop, President of NJ Friends of Clearwater, in a press release.

What to Expect at Clearwater’s 50th
Visitors can expect live music on two stages throughout the day, with the grand Circle of Song Finale at 7:30 p.m. on the Electric Stage. Musicians, including Marcus Misery and the Pieces of Eight, will even host a sea shanty clinic, teaching attendees how to sing classic maritime songs.
Between sets, guests can:
- Explore eco-focused exhibits and green-living workshops
- Shop artisan crafts and local vendor booths
- Enjoy food trucks and refreshments
- Bring the kids to a dedicated children’s play area
Picnic baskets, blankets, and lawn chairs are welcome, making the festival a relaxed and family-friendly day by the ocean.
A Half-Century of Music and Activism
For five decades, Clearwater has carried forward Seeger’s vision, harnessing the power of music to bring people together while highlighting the urgent need to care for the environment. This year’s milestone at Sunset Park, just steps from the beach in Asbury Park, continues that legacy.
