Every year, the best bars across the globe are ranked by The World’s 50 Best Bars. This year’s list highlights 50 varied bars across the planet contributing to the current cocktail renaissance we find ourselves in. The list travels New York to Toronto, Bangkok to LA, but it’s the top spot that is making waves.
A Mexico City bar was named the best bar in the entire world.
Mexico City’s Handshake Speakeasy was highlighted by World’s 50 Best for its Prohibition-era style and simple, but convoluted approach to cocktails tucked away in Colonia Juárez,CDMX. Head bartender Eric Van Beek is celebrated for the rather simple list he serves at Handshake Speakeasy, which is highlighted by a scientific approach to mixology thanks to the on-site cocktail laboratory headed by Manager Yiyi Aparicio.
The cocktail lab is where the team experiments non-stop, constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in bartending. Next-level fig martinis and mezcal highballs sound straightforward, but World’s 50 Best emphasizes that the magic needs to be experienced to be understood. Differing textures, vibrant colors, pristine glassware, and house-made bitters are the name of the game at Handshake Speakeasy.
With a main floor space sporting a constant flow of drinks to its 32 seats and a basement hiding what the publication calls a “pure Mexican spirit,” its no wonder why Handshake Speakeasy is being celebrated as the best bar in the entire world.
