Montclair Brewery Honors Whitney Houston With Black History Month Brew

Lauren Dresner

Montclair Brewery will release an annual craft beer in celebration of Black History Month. With several beers making nods to black history, Montclair Brewery will release a brew that hits a little closer to home, honoring the legendary singer and New Jersey native Whitney Houston with a speciality ale.

Born and raised in Newark and East Orange, NJ–Houston’s legacy is close to the hearts of New Jerseyans. She is regarded as one of the greatest singers of all time, and we take pride in her Garden State roots. What better way to celebrate our beloved icon than cracking open a cold one?

The new ale, titled “The Whitney” is a Hefewizen–a crisp, wheat ale. “Come out and celebrate with us the release of our new Whitney beer brewed in honor of Whitney Houston and all of her monumental achievements. This special new release serves to contribute to her indelible legacy, highlighting her roots in East Orange and in recognition of Black History Month,” says Montclair Brewery.

Run, don’t walk–the new beer will be released in the brewery taproom on 101 Walnut street, February 9.

Here are the details: the launch party will start at 5:30 p.m. and will feature highlights of Houston’s movies and her music of course. From 7:30-9:30 p.m., talented local musicians will sing a mixture of Houston’s iconic songs and their own material.

Out of town that day? Don’t sweat. The Whitney Hefewizen will be available on draft and four packs in the taproom. The ale will also be sold throughout select restaurants, supermarkets, and liquor stores in New Jersey and New York, so keep an eye out.

Since it first opened in 2018, Montclair Brewery has released several beers over the years to celebrate key figures of Black History–Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Kobe Bryant—to name a few.

Not a fan of Hefewizen, but still want to honor Black History Month with Montclair Brewery? They have plenty of other beers available to celebrate black history. The Connor Hill Stout pays homage to owner Denise’s roots in Jamaica and the Salute Golden Ale shouts out Awesome Two–a legendary hip hop group from New Jersey. Here is a full list of the past Black History Month beer series.

The Houston-inspired beer has big shoes to fill if it’s going to represent such an iconic legend. Check out Montclair Brewery Friday this evening and drink beer in honor of some of the greats.
