How Much Kratom Do You Take? The Ultimate Guide

by The Digest

The difficult thing about substances that aren’t well-researched is that there aren’t as many guidelines for how much you should take. Take cannabis, for example.

People have known the effects of cannabis for a long time, but it hasn’t been until recently that we’ve started to research it and flesh out dosage guidelines. Kratom is a similar, unresearched substance.

Humans have been using kratom for thousands of years, but we still don’t have a lot of guidelines for it in this country. How much kratom do you take? What are the effects of kratom?

Research on these questions would be very useful to those who are looking to use kratom to treat an issue they’re having. We’re going to try and answer the kratom dosage question, giving you some insight into how much you can take to start seeing effects.

Let’s take a look.

How Much Kratom do You Take? A Brief Guide

Purchasing a bag of kratom with no prior knowledge might have you wondering how intense kratom is, how concentrated the powder is, and what the effects are.

These are all smart questions, seeing as there are a lot of products on the market that can be very intense, even dangerous if taken in excess. The difficulty of this issue is made worse by the fact that kratom companies can’t recommend the product for consumption on the bag.

The FDA has yet to grant kratom the license to promote itself as a product with potential health benefits. In some states, kratom is even classified as a schedule 1 drug

The result of this equation is a bunch of people buying kratom with no real guidebook on how to take it or what it can do.

Kratom Dosage

Kratom comes in the form of a powder. In a lot of cases, you can buy kratom that’s already encapsulated, or you can buy capsules to insert the kratom into after you buy it.

Having capsules doesn’t do much other than to help regulate the dosage without the use of a scale. It’s important to try smaller doses when you get started because you don’t know how the substance will affect you.

Kratom is typically used for pain relief and anti-anxiety treatments, but it can also produce psychoactive effects and alter your mood. For this reason, you should set a period of time aside for yourself to experience kratom the first time you take it.

The first dose you take should be somewhere around one or two grams. If you don’t have a scale or capsules, this usually winds up to be somewhere around a half teaspoon’s worth of kratom.

Once you work your way up to a normal dosage, you should even out somewhere around two to four grams.

If you start to take more than that, some veins of kratom can be used to produce euphoric and psychoactive effects. Other veins will simply work as a powerful sedative in high doses.

The differences between veins can be related to the particular subspecies of kratom you’re using, but it mostly has to do with the time that the leaf was harvested.

Kratom leaves are ground into powder, and the point in the season when the leaf is harvested determines the alkaloids and other properties of the plant.

Tolerance

We do develop a tolerance to kratom, and excessive use might lead to a small dependency on the substance. Kratom operates on opioid receptors, although it’s not as strong or addictive as most prescription pain or anti-anxiety medication.

In order to manage your tolerance and potential dependence upon kratom, it might be useful to take tolerance breaks here and there when you feel yourself requiring more.

If two to four grams stops being effective, take a break and allow your tolerance to recover.

Dosing Frequency

Another thing to keep a close eye on is the frequency with which you use kratom.

For a lot of people, it works as a fast-acting way to reduce anxiety and pain, so it’s tempting to take it whenever you have an uncomfortable feeling. Kratom can be used as a prescription would, though, and that’s the better way to approach it.

You can take kratom at regular intervals and experience lasting pain relief. A regular amount of kratom in your system throughout the day will work just as well as taking it at the moment you feel pain.

Taking it without a schedule can lead you to depend on it whenever you think you need it. That’s not necessarily the best idea, seeing as it can be difficult to stop once you’ve reached that point.

That said, you can certainly use kratom as a way to treat pain or anxiety when it flares up at the moment. Different individuals have unique relationships to potentially addictive substances, and the way you handle your treatment is entirely up to you.

Using Potentiators

One way to improve the effects you get from kratom is to use something called a “potentiator.” Potentiators are simply substances that, when used along with another substance, bring out more effects than you would otherwise experience.

For example, mixing kratom with lemon or lime juice might activate certain alkaloids in kratom and produce stronger effects. The same goes for cayenne pepper, chamomile tea, coffee, turmeric, and magnesium.

You can take a look at these kratom potentiators to get more ideas on how you can improve your dosage.

This is also a great way to save money on kratom and avoid the onset of dependency. If you find that your normal dosage is starting to lack power, just incorporate a potentiator without adding to the amount of kratom you’re taking.
