Staff

Does the idea of escaping to the Big Apple fill you with excitement? It’s easy to say that you can’t see and do everything there is to experience in NYC in just three days, but there’s still an awful lot you can fit in and make the most of, no matter how short your trip might be.

New York City is positively bursting with energy, excitement, and a beat all its own. It’s full of variety, iconic sights, delicious eats, and a vibe that simply can’t be replicated or duplicated anywhere else. This makes NYC the perfect destination for a short break, whether you’re looking to try something new with your older children or experience some romantic moments with your partner – New York City has it all and more. Read on for what to do on a three-day weekend getaway in New York.

Where to Stay: Budget-Friendly Bases in Great Locations

If your time in New York City is limited, then location is key. The location of your accommodation will set the pace of your trip, and if you don’t want to spend the majority of those limited hours riding the subway or walking miles and miles across town, then choosing a central but affordable place to stay is key. If you’re trying to keep costs low, it’s absolutely possible to book a cheap room in New York without sacrificing location.

Look at options in Midtown, the Lower East Side, or even across the river in Brooklyn for a wide range of choices. If you want to avoid the bigger hotel chains or if you were hoping to include a few subway rides as part of your authentic NYC experience, then look at alternatives such as boutique stays or even short-term Airbnbs close to the major subway lines.

How to Spend Day 1: Classic Sights and a Big Apple Welcome

Start your first day in Midtown, which is home to Times Square, Bryant Park and Grand Central. The buzzing energy from Times Square is a strong way to kick off your trip and you can get some iconic and memorable photos straight off the bat.

Next, head to Bryant Park. It’s just a few blocks away, so you can easily walk it and take in the sights and sounds as you go. Remember to pick up a hot dog or pretzel from one of the many famous stands in the city as you go. The park is great for people watching, a romantic stroll or enjoying the skating rink if you’re visiting NYC in the winter.

Now it’s time to head to Grand Central Station. Step inside this stunning Beaux-Arts landmark. Don’t miss the celestial ceiling mural or the Whispering Gallery near the Oyster Bar. Again, you can get some great pictures here and get a sense of what it must be like to be a real-life New Yorker!

Later on, why not take in a Broadway show, just remember to book ahead if there’s something specific you want to see. Or for a more budget-friendly or intimate experience, consider a quirky off-Broadway performance at an open mic night or a spoken-word performance at a local bar.

How to Spend Day 2: Iconic Locations and Great Eats

Day 2, and you’ll want to experience some of the biggest and best locations in the city. This begins with the Empire State Building, perfect for 360-degree views of the city. The 86th-floor observation deck is open-air and unforgettable!

Then why not head to Central Park and hire a rowboat across the lake. Or if you and the kids are looking for something a little different, check out the Central Park Zoo or one of the many playgrounds hidden throughout the area.

If you’re feeling hungry then New York City will have you spoilt for choice. Head on over to Hell’s Kitchen and you’ll find that this neighborhood is literally packed with great dining options. From cosy Italian restaurants to trend fusion eateries, casual ramen spots and plenty of bars and cafes. As with most places in New York, to avoid disappointment, try making a reservation before your trip to guarantee you get a table.

How to Spend Day 3: Exploring Neighborhoods and Saying Goodbye

It’s your last day so you need to make the most of the time you have left! For an early breakfast or brunch, try exploring some new neighborhoods like SoHo, Greenwich Village or the West Village to soak up the atmosphere and even check out the many fashion boutiques and unique shopping experiences.

In the afternoon, head along the Brooklyn Bridge and take some incredible skyline photos. Or check out the High Line for a scenic walk and to try some of the city’s trendiest bars and eateries.

When the evening sets in, try booking tickets to a comedy club, or finish off your trip with a sunset ferry ride (Staten Island Ferry is free!) or a final city-view dinner at one of the many rooftop bars and restaurants in the city.

Top Tips for Making the Most of Your Trip

You’re not in NYC for long, so here’s how you can easily make the most of it.

  • Always book or buy tickets in advance: No one wants to miss out on a major attraction. Never assume that there’ll be tickets available on the day, or that you’ll get a late or early showing. Always plan in advance.
  • Walk where possible: Walking is often much more convenient between landmarks, and it also gives you the chance to soak up the city’s atmosphere.
  • Pack carefully: Always wear comfortable shoes that are already broken in and comfortable. Wearing layers is also recommended – the weather in NYC can change quickly!
  • Use Tech: Be a tech-savvy traveller and download subway apps, maps, and food recommendation apps so you can easily find what you need on the go.

Final Thoughts

For a fast-paced weekend that’s full of culture and incredible memories, you can’t beat New York City. Consider writing a bucket list of all the things you definitely want to see and experience during your trip, but remember to mix those up with spontaneous moments…in the Big Apple – there’ll be plenty!
