87 Sussex is a fine dining restaurant in the heart of Jersey City’s Paulus Hook neighborhood. The restaurant offers globally spanning flavors which are defined by expert technique and a commitment to local produce.

Our meal at 87 Sussex began with a trio of starters that set the tone for the rest of the evening. The Oysters and Pearls, a dish featuring freshly shucked oysters and a dollop of caviar, was a decadent delight—offering the height of luxury ingredients.

The Escargot Wontons, a creative take on the classic French dish, were rich and buttery, with a perfect balance of flavors. And the Ox and Egg, a dish featuring tender oxtail and a perfectly cooked egg, was a revelation in flavor-making and technique.

For our main courses, we opted for the Barramundi and the Braised Short Rib. The Barramundi featured fresh cockles, preserved peppers, tomato, broccolini, braised scallions, and saffron bouillon. It was a masterclass in flavors and textures that featured an array of fresh, vibrant ingredients. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the accompanying sauce added a depth of flavor that elevated it to new heights. 

The Braised Short Rib, a dish featuring Barolo braised beef ribs, white sweet potato mousseline, Chinese long bean, and Vidalia onion crown, was a hearty and comforting delight. The beef was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying sweet potato and beans added a nice contrast in texture.

Throughout our meal, the service was attentive and knowledgeable, with our server happy to answer any questions we had about the menu. The atmosphere was refined and relaxed, with a focus on natural light and modern aesthetics. The restaurant has a smart casual dress code and offers a full bar with a wide selection of drinks.
