The world-famous cheesesteak at Angelo's Pizzeria

A popular pizzeria in Philadelphia—famous for serving what many, including myself, argue is the best cheesesteak in the city—is planning to open a New Jersey location.

Angelo’s Pizzeria of South Philadelphia is known for two things: pizza and hoagies. Many Philly food connoisseurs consider Angelo’s to be home to both the city’s best pizza and best cheesesteak. Personally, I have yet to try the pizza, but I’m 100% on board with the cheesesteak praise. To this day, it’s the best I’ve had.

Angelo’s announced on Instagram that it will open in West Collingswood Heights, NJ—just over the border in the Garden State. “We bought DiNic’s property in Mt. Ephraim… It will be an Angelo’s Pizzeria with a full menu,” they wrote, adding that the new location will serve pizzas, cheesesteaks, cutlets, meatballs, hoagies, salads, and include dine-in seating (something the flagship does not offer).

Unlike many of the legendary cheesesteak spots in Philly that have been around for decades, Angelo’s is still relatively new—having opened in 2019. Before its Philadelphia debut, Angelo’s operated for a brief time in Haddonfield, New Jersey.

This move is just the latest example of Angelo’s expansive vision. In late 2023, owner Danny DiGiampietro surprised the food world when it was announced he would partner with Bradley Cooper to open a cheesesteak shop in New York City called Danny & Coop’s Cheesesteaks.

Now, Angelo’s is making its triumphant return to South Jersey. An opening date has not been set.

For cheesesteak freaks like myself, it’s welcome news. While we’re opening NJ locations… can we get a North Jersey spot next?
